Security Fixes - January 27, 2026
Summary
All 5 CRITICAL security vulnerabilities have been successfully resolved. TypeScript compilation passes for all affected services.
Fixed Vulnerabilities
1. SQL Injection - AuthService ✅ FIXED
File: backend/src/services/AuthService.ts
Location: Line 334
CVE Category: CWE-89: SQL Injection
Risk Level: CRITICAL
Issue:
// BEFORE (VULNERABLE)
AND attempted_at > datetime('now', '-${lockoutDuration} minutes')
Fix Applied:
// AFTER (SECURE)
// Validate and sanitize lockoutDuration to prevent SQL injection
// Ensure it's a number between 1 and 1440 (24 hours)
const safeLockoutDuration = Math.min(Math.max(parseInt(String(lockoutDuration), 10) || 15, 1), 1440);
// Use parameterized query
AND attempted_at > datetime('now', '-' || ? || ' minutes')
// ... [username, ipAddress, safeLockoutDuration]
Security Improvements:
- Input validation: lockoutDuration constrained to 1-1440 minutes
- Parameterized query: No string interpolation
- Default fallback: 15 minutes if invalid
2. SQL Injection - FavoritesService ✅ FIXED
File: backend/src/services/FavoritesService.ts
Location: Lines 131-134
CVE Category: CWE-89: SQL Injection
Risk Level: CRITICAL
Issue:
// BEFORE (VULNERABLE)
if (limit !== undefined) {
query += ` LIMIT ${limit}`;
if (offset !== undefined) {
query += ` OFFSET ${offset}`;
}
}
const stmt = db.prepare(query);
return stmt.all(userId) as Favorite[];
Fix Applied:
// AFTER (SECURE)
const params: any[] = [userId];
if (limit !== undefined) {
// Validate limit is a positive integer (1-1000)
const safeLimit = Math.max(1, Math.min(parseInt(String(limit), 10) || 50, 1000));
query += ` LIMIT ?`;
params.push(safeLimit);
if (offset !== undefined) {
// Validate offset is a non-negative integer
const safeOffset = Math.max(0, parseInt(String(offset), 10) || 0);
query += ` OFFSET ?`;
params.push(safeOffset);
}
}
const stmt = db.prepare(query);
return stmt.all(...params) as Favorite[];
Security Improvements:
- Input validation: limit (1-1000), offset (>= 0)
- Parameterized query: Using placeholders
- Default values: limit=50, offset=0
3. SQL Injection - PlayTrackingService ✅ FIXED
File: backend/src/services/PlayTrackingService.ts
Location: Line 374
CVE Category: CWE-89: SQL Injection
Risk Level: CRITICAL
Issue:
// BEFORE (VULNERABLE)
AND started_at >= datetime('now', '-${days} days')
// ... [userId]
Fix Applied:
// AFTER (SECURE)
// Validate and sanitize days parameter to prevent SQL injection
// Ensure it's a positive integer between 1 and 365
const safeDays = Math.min(Math.max(parseInt(String(days), 10) || 30, 1), 365);
const data = UserDatabaseService.all(
`SELECT ...
AND started_at >= datetime('now', '-' || ? || ' days')
...`,
[userId, safeDays]
);
Security Improvements:
- Input validation: days constrained to 1-365
- Parameterized query: No string interpolation
- Default fallback: 30 days if invalid
4. Weak JWT Secret ✅ FIXED
File: backend/src/config.ts
Location: Line 52
CVE Category: CWE-798: Hard-coded Credentials
Risk Level: CRITICAL
Issue:
// BEFORE (VULNERABLE)
jwtSecret: process.env.JWT_SECRET || 'change-in-production-use-long-random-string',
Fix Applied:
// AFTER (SECURE)
import crypto from 'crypto';
function getJwtSecret(): string {
const secret = process.env.JWT_SECRET;
if (secret) {
return secret;
}
// In production, fail fast if JWT_SECRET is not set
if (process.env.NODE_ENV === 'production') {
throw new Error(
'FATAL: JWT_SECRET environment variable is required in production.\n' +
'Generate a secure secret: openssl rand -base64 64\n' +
'Set it in your .env file or environment variables.'
);
}
// In development, generate a random secret and warn
const devSecret = `INSECURE-DEV-ONLY-${crypto.randomBytes(32).toString('hex')}`;
console.warn('\n⚠️ WARNING: Using auto-generated JWT secret for development.');
console.warn(' In production, set JWT_SECRET environment variable.\n');
return devSecret;
}
export const config = {
// ...
jwtSecret: getJwtSecret(),
// ...
};
Security Improvements:
- Production enforcement: Server refuses to start without JWT_SECRET
- Development safety: Auto-generates random secret with warning
- Clear guidance: Error message shows how to generate secure secret
- No default secret: Public default removed entirely
Deployment Checklist:
- Generate secure JWT secret:
openssl rand -base64 64 - Set JWT_SECRET in production environment
- Rotate existing tokens after deployment
- Verify production startup (will fail if not set)
5. Path Traversal - Proxy Routes ✅ FIXED
File: backend/src/routes/proxy.ts
Location: Lines 115-157 (3 routes)

const relativePath = req.params.path;
const localPath = path.join(config.flashpointImagesPath, relativePath);
// No validation - could access ../../../../etc/passwd
await serveFileWithFallback(localPath, ...);
});
Fix Applied:
// AFTER (SECURE)
/**
* Validate path to prevent directory traversal attacks
*/
function validatePath(requestedPath: string, allowedBasePath: string): string | null {
try {
// Normalize the requested path to remove . and .. sequences
const normalizedPath = path.normalize(requestedPath).replace(/^(\.\.(\/|\\|$))+/, '');
// Join with base path
const fullPath = path.join(allowedBasePath, normalizedPath);
// Resolve to absolute path
const resolvedPath = path.resolve(fullPath);
const resolvedBase = path.resolve(allowedBasePath);
// Verify the resolved path is within the allowed directory
if (!resolvedPath.startsWith(resolvedBase)) {
logger.warn(`[Security] Path traversal attempt detected: ${requestedPath}`);
return null;
}
return resolvedPath;
} catch (error) {
logger.error('[Security] Path validation error:', error);
return null;
}
}
router.get('/images/:path(*)', async (req, res, next) => {
const relativePath = req.params.path;
// Validate path to prevent directory traversal

// No validation - id could be ../../etc/passwd
Fix Applied:
// AFTER (SECURE)
const id = req.url?.split('/mount/')[1];
if (!id) {
this.sendError(res, 400, 'Missing mount ID');
return;
}
// Validate mount ID to prevent path traversal
// ID should not contain path separators or traversal sequences
if (id.includes('/') || id.includes('\\') || id.includes('..') || id.includes('\0')) {
logger.warn(`[Security] Invalid mount ID detected: ${id}`);
this.sendError(res, 400, 'Invalid mount ID');
return;
}

git commit -m "security: fix critical vulnerabilities (SQL injection, path traversal, weak JWT)
- Fix SQL injection in AuthService lockout duration query (CWE-89)
- Fix SQL injection in FavoritesService pagination (CWE-89)
- Fix SQL injection in PlayTrackingService date range query (CWE-89)
- Enforce JWT_SECRET in production, generate secure dev secret (CWE-798)
- Add path validation to prevent directory traversal in proxy routes (CWE-22)
- Validate mount IDs to prevent path traversal in game service (CWE-22)
- Validate ZIP paths to ensure they're within games directory (CWE-22)
All parameterized queries now use validated inputs with safe bounds.
All file paths are validated against allowed directories.
Production deployments now require JWT_SECRET to be set explicitly.
